• Who is the author of this blog
The author is Joe Stewart and I am profoundly deaf. I use a cochlear implant device as my means of hearing. I started to go deaf in my late teens and it took a further 30 odd years until acoustic hearing aids no longer provided sufficient amplification/processing for me to hear. Several years after implant the remaining hearing aid ceased to give any benefit and a bilateral implant was attempted but it was unsuccessful. I suffer from otosclerosis, a progressive deafness due to overgrowth of bone in the middle and in my case, the inner ear. The advanced state of the otosclerosis was the reason no bilateral implant was possible as no entry through oval window was possible. While otosclerosis is usually associated with conductive hearing loss in my case it also resulted in profound sensorineural hearing loss.
The initial implant still functions and I have benefited from several processor upgrades and have the ability to converse, face to face, in a non-noisy setting. I of course use several assistive devices including the Captel phone, a mini-mic for direct transmission to the cochlear processor, caption on my TV and a variety computer and smart-phone applications.
I believe hearing devices and communication technology will continue to advance and provide better solutions to the deaf, hard-of-hearing and to those who identify themselves as belonging to the Culturally Deaf Community. It is in the areas of Speech-to-Text and Gesturing-to-Text that I believe the main advances in AT will occur.
